Usages of 4D simulation in collaborative design: a case study

22 02 2013

In literature 4D is primarily dedicated to the constructability analyses conducted during the pre-construction stage. It is also adapted to monitoring the progress of work. In short, 4D makes it possible to check that building elements can be built/assembled within the spatial and time constraints of the construction project.

In parallel researchers more and more attemps to understand the added-value of 4D CAD in design stage. We conducted a case study aiming at implementing a 4D model during the "advanced design" stage of a construction project.

The results are reported in a short article published on Tudor's website: in french and in english.

4D simulation for the teaching of high-rise structures principles

12 02 2013
4D simulations are usually used to assess constructibility of construction projects in preconstruction stage, i.e. when the design project is in its last developments. However alternative usages of 4D models can be envisaged.
In the context of a project management master course at University of Liège, architects and construction engineers are developing 4D models for the understanding of high-rise structural principles as well as for the analysis of the construction processes.
Some results are provided in the following movie.

Touch Gestures: how to design?

08 08 2011

In one of our projects we are designing and prototyping a mobile application for construction site management. A remaining question when specifying functionalities and implementing them on touch-based smartphones is how to define gestures use. Another issue is to ensure that on-screen interactions have the same meaning for the user in the various screens of the application.

User tests and ergonomics assessment of the whole application are probably the best methods. However our initial experience shows that it is important to consider this issue in the early stages of design, during brainstorming and specification sessions.
For that purpose, the Touch Gesture Reference Guide, together with the all new Touch Gesture Reference Cards are probably perfect companions for the application design team. They are designed and provided by Craig Villamor, Dan Willis, Luke Wroblewski and Kim Fulton.

Lets try it in our next sessions...

Speaking_image® : Annotation collaborative d'images

04 02 2011

SpeakingImage is an open source package developed by Fundación General CSIC and 2mdc.com. By the time being, this is a beta testing environment where one may get a taste of the functionality of the package. Sooner than later we will open a specific website for the project from where one will be able to download working copies of the software package and all the required documentation, please, be patient.

Interaction-Design.org lance son encyclopédie !

01 02 2011
